Research Competition Information

Eligibility Criteria

Must be Military Otolaryngology staff, residents, or fellows (interest medical students are eligible)

Who have written a manuscript that is accepted for publication in a peer-reviewed journal during the last year or
Who are presenting an oral presentation accepted at an annual society meeting (AAO, COSM, etc.).

Must be an active member of the Society of Military Otolaryngologist (SMO) if selected. Recommended to be a member to submit.
Resident and Faculty cannot submit the same abstract or poster for each category.
Agree to have abstract or poster posted on SMO forum and or blog post.
Interested Medical Students are eligible to submit as well

Awards

Awards are given to the 1st and 2nd Place Winners for each category. Awards Include:

1st Place Award- $400 Cash along with podium recognition
2nd Place Award- $200 Cash along with podium recognition

Winners will be announced at the annual meeting. Winners encouraged to attend but do not need to be present to win.

Submission & Format

Abstract submissions must be received by September 6, 2024. Semi-finalists will be required to submit the final paper on or before September 20, 2024. Submissions mush include:

Abstract to include:

Title
Type of Study (e.g. chart review, prospective trial, animal study, etc.)
Background
Materials and Methods
Results and Conclusion.

Cover page that includes:

Name
Rank
Institution
Project Title
Where the abstract was/is being submitted

Judging Criteria

An independent review panel will judge the submissions. The judges will not have knowledge of the authors or their parent institutions. Judging criteria will includes:

Scientific merit
Methodology
Practical application
Style and composition,
Depth of discussion and
Validity of conclusions.
Overall organization, clarity of summary, visual presentation and military relevance
